Handwoven bags made from doum palm

Handwoven bags made from doum palm

These bags are handwoven from the robust fibers of the doum palm using a spiral weaving technique passed down through generations of local artisans. This traditional craft produces versatile and sustainable accessories. The technique of spiraling outwards from the center of the basket creates the typical uniform structure that gives each handmade piece its unique strength and authentic Moroccan Aesthetics.

Moroccan craft tradition

Basket weaving is Morocco's oldest craft tradition, originally practiced exclusively by men before women also became skilled in this ancient art form. The craft can be traced back to Phoenician and Roman influences and has evolved over time as Moroccan artisans have developed their own distinctive style, incorporating local materials and techniques that vary significantly from region to region.

Today, artisans are organized into cooperatives and associations where they work together to create products that are sold in major cities like Marrakech, Fez and Rabat. This traditional knowledge is passed down from generation to generation in farming families in small villages in the Atlas Mountains, where The craftsmen preserve the authentic methods that have characterized Moroccan basketry for centuries. The craft is an integral part of the country's cultural fabric, with each piece a testament to the patience, ingenuity and artistic vision that characterize Moroccan craftsmanship.

Spiral weaving technique

The intricate spiral weaving technique begins with craftsmen forming a small central spiral of prepared doum strips that form the foundation from which the entire basket grows outwards in concentric circles. Each new fiber strip is carefully placed parallel to the existing spiral and secured with thin binding threads made of the same material. The craftsmen use only their fingers or simple needles to maintain the precise tension and alignment required to achieve the characteristic snail shell pattern.

As the spiral expands, weavers gradually move from flat, circular weaving for the base to angled construction for the sides, carefully manipulating the path of the spiral to control the final shape of the basket. The technique culminates in a distinctive wavy finish at the edge - a hallmark of Moroccan craftsmanship that reflects the natural properties of doum fibers and traditional aesthetic preferences passed down through generations of artisans

Doum palm fiber properties

Doum palm fibers differ from other palm materials due to their unique combination of robustness and flexibility, making them ideal for intricate basket weaving. The fibers come from the Hyphaene thebaica palm, which grows with a characteristic dichotomous branching pattern in the dry regions of Morocco. This unique palm species produces leaves that are significantly wider and more resistant than leaves from date palms or other common palm species.

The superior quality of doum fibers becomes apparent during processing, where craftsmen achieve remarkably clean and precise weaving results compared to other palm materials. These fibers retain their structural integrity while remaining supple enough for detailed work, allowing artisans to achieve the characteristic "cleaner, finer" finish that is synonymous with high-quality Moroccan basketry. The durability of the material ensures that finished products retain their shape and strength with long-term use, whether it's traditional couscous baskets known as 'medona' or modern handbags and storage containers.

Traditional harvesting methods

The harvesting process begins when artisans carefully select dried palm leaves from doum trees and time the collection so that the fibers are of the best quality for weaving. This sustainable practice involves regular pruning of palm leaves, which promotes healthy tree growth while providing the raw materials needed for basket weaving. The harvested leaves are carefully prepared by being cleaned, cut into uniform strips and sorted according to their flexibility and strength.

Palm plantations in southern Morocco, especially around the Fez region and the Atlas Mountains, are the main source of these natural fibers. Local farming families have developed specialized knowledge over generations about the optimal time of harvest and the techniques required to extract the best weaving material from each palm tree. This eco-friendly approach ensures that the craft contributes to a sustainable management of Morocco's palm forests while preserving the traditional relationship between artisans and their natural environment.

Hand woven wicker goods

At Maroskan, I choose each basket with my heart. They are woven by hand by skilled Moroccan artisans using sustainable palm leaves and seaweed - materials that are both beautiful and strong.

I love how the baskets combine function and aesthetics: they can hold everything from books and blankets to groceries or beach gear, and look great in any home.

Some of the baskets are even food-safe, so you can safely use them in the kitchen.

For me they are more than just practical - they are small pieces of Moroccan Everyday magic that brings warmth and authenticity into your life.
